Our Story
Whenua Iti Outdoors was founded by Hazel Nash, with the first course running in 1985. Hazel had a vision to operate outdoor programmes that would support holistic learning in the local community. Her "little piece of land" became the site for Whenua Iti, where we still are today. Although the programmes we deliver have changed over the years, the kaupapa (purpose) which was first established remains at the core of all we do.
ExpedNZ is launched
After 35 years of experience in delivering meaningful experiential education programs within New Zealand, and with growing interest from overseas groups, ExpedNZ was conceptualised in 2016. We saw the potential for overseas groups to experience and connect with our unique cultural & natural environments and share their learning across the globe. After all, we are global citizens and all share this world together. There is a Māori proverb that we often use to express this sentiment:
He waka eke noa - We are all in this together.
A chance to give back
100% of profit generated by ExpedNZ programs goes back to the community through the Whenua Iti Foundation. The foundation has been established to support wellbeing in our youth through access to adventure-based learning programs delivered by our parent not-for-profit organisation, Whenua Iti Outdoors.
